My name is Hailey and I Senior Environmental Graphic Designer at Naughty Dog Inc.
While many artist or artistically inclined people know what they want to do right away, for some it takes a lot of trial and error. And I just so happen to be the latter kind of artist. I use to consider myself a master of none. I loved some many different things and I wore so many different hats, from movie props, ceramics, to typography. I’ve done so much and became highly proficient in many of them. I literally help craft fake worlds for one of the top video game companies in the world as my day job.
But that term “master of none” never really resonated with me, it reinforced my fear that there was no place for me, I was a mastering nothing. However one day, one of my colleagues corrected me. She said you are not a master of none, that so disrespectful to yourself and your skills! You are much more like a master generalist, if they need something, anything really, they know you will figure out a way to do it. And that really helped me re frame how I thought about myself, I felt grounded in my skills. There is space for all the different types of creators be it if they are a specialist or generalist.
That is why I feel that my experiences has allowed me to gain a true respect and understand for many different forms of art and all the artist that make them. I believe there is something truly special in the process of making and learning. And as a master generalist it allows me to have a perspective to curate a unique exhibition.
